Chapterstack

Terms of Service

Last updated: May 20, 2026

By accessing or using Chapterstack you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. Please read them carefully before registering. If you do not agree, do not use the platform.

1. The Service

What Chapterstack provides

Chapterstack is a platform that lets authors write, publish, and monetise long-form written content chapter-by-chapter, and lets readers discover and read published content. The platform is provided on an 'as is' and 'as available' basis.

Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old to use Chapterstack. If you are between 13 and 15 years old, you may only use the service with the verifiable consent of a parent or legal guardian. In jurisdictions where the minimum age for digital services is higher than 16, you must meet the applicable local requirement. By creating an account you confirm that you meet the applicable age requirement or have obtained the necessary parental consent.

Changes to the service

We may modify or discontinue any part of the service at any time. We will give reasonable advance notice of material changes — for example by email or by a prominent notice on the platform — before they take effect.

Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms of Service from time to time. The date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of the service after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised terms. We will notify registered users of significant changes.

2. Accounts

Registration

You may register with a Google account or an email address and password. You are responsible for keeping your credentials secure and for all activity that occurs under your account. You must notify us immediately if you suspect unauthorised access.

Accuracy

You agree to provide accurate information when registering and to keep it up to date. Providing false information — including misrepresenting your age — may result in immediate account termination.

Suspension and termination by us

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms or engage in harmful behaviour, with or without prior notice depending on the severity of the violation. Accounts that have been inactive for an extended period may be closed after reasonable advance notice sent to the registered email address.

Termination by you

You may delete your own account at any time from the Settings page. Deletion takes effect immediately. See the Content section below for what happens to your published work after deletion.

3. Content

Ownership

You retain full ownership of all content you write on Chapterstack. The platform does not claim exclusive rights over your work. You are free to publish, distribute, licence, or sell your content through any other platform or channel — simultaneously or independently — at any time. Writing on Chapterstack does not require exclusivity, and no revenue obligation arises merely from creating or drafting content here.

Licence for publicly published content

By choosing to publish a chapter and make it publicly accessible on Chapterstack, you grant Chapterstack a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, and irrevocable licence to host, display, distribute, promote, and monetise that content through the platform and its associated services. This licence applies only to content you have explicitly made public through the publishing flow. It does not extend to drafts, private notes, or any content you have not published. The licence survives account closure, consistent with the 'Content after account deletion' clause below. Once a chapter is published and accessible to readers, you cannot revoke this licence or require the platform to remove that published content. You remain the author and retain full freedom to publish the same work elsewhere.

Prohibited content

You must not post content that is unlawful, defamatory, abusive, obscene, or that infringes the intellectual property rights of others. Content that sexualises or endangers minors is strictly prohibited and will be reported to the relevant authorities. We reserve the right to remove content that violates these terms without notice and to report it to law enforcement or regulators where required.

Reporting illegal or harmful content

If you encounter content that you believe is illegal or violates these terms, please contact us via the Contact Us page. We will review all reports and take appropriate action. A dedicated in-app reporting mechanism is planned for a future release.

AI-generated content

You may publish content produced with AI assistance. You must accurately declare the level of AI involvement using the disclosure options provided. You remain solely responsible for the content regardless of how it was produced.

Data retention and best-effort availability

We make reasonable efforts to preserve content hosted on Chapterstack, but we do not guarantee permanent storage or uninterrupted availability. Content — whether authored or paid for — may be deleted, restricted, or become inaccessible for any reason, including but not limited to: legal obligations, abuse reports, technical incidents, infrastructure failures, or operational decisions such as the removal of content that has not been accessed for an extended period. Chapterstack and its operators accept no liability for any loss of content or loss of access to content, regardless of the cause or scale of the event, except where such loss results directly from our gross negligence or intentional misconduct, or where exclusion of liability is prohibited by applicable law. This limitation applies equally to authors who lose stored work and to readers who have paid to access chapters. Authors are strongly encouraged to keep independent backups of their work.

Content after account deletion

If you delete your account, your published chapters remain on the platform with authorship anonymised so that readers who have accessed them are not affected. Unpublished drafts are permanently deleted.

4. Payments & Coins

Virtual currency

Chapterstack may offer a virtual coin system that allows readers to unlock paid chapters and authors to earn revenue. Coins have no cash value outside the platform and are non-transferable. Full payment terms will be published when the coin system launches.

Refunds

Coin purchases are generally final and non-refundable once a transaction is completed. Where applicable law grants you a right of withdrawal or refund — including the 14-day statutory withdrawal right available to consumers in the European Union for digital content not yet accessed — those statutory rights are not affected by this clause and will be honoured upon valid request.

5. Privacy & Cookies

Personal data

We process personal data on the legal bases described in the Privacy Policy, including contractual necessity, legitimate interest, compliance with legal obligations, and — where required — explicit consent. Registering for an account or using the service does not in itself constitute consent to any processing that requires a separate consent mechanism. See the Privacy Policy for full details.

Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies to operate the service and, where you consent, to analyse usage. A cookie consent mechanism is provided on first visit. You can withdraw cookie consent at any time from the Settings page.

6. Disclaimers & Limitation of Liability

No warranty

Chapterstack is provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose or uninterrupted availability. We do not warrant that the service will be free from errors or that defects will be corrected.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Chapterstack and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service. This limitation does not apply to cases of gross negligence or intentional misconduct on our part, to liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or to any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.

7. Governing Law & Disputes

Applicable law

These terms are governed by the laws of the country in which Chapterstack's operator is legally registered. This does not deprive you of the protection of any mandatory provisions of the law of your country of residence. Consumers in the European Union and EEA retain the right to bring claims before the courts of their country of residence, regardless of this choice of law clause.

Notice and cure

Before initiating any legal claim or formal dispute against Chapterstack, you agree to send us written notice describing the issue, the specific provision you believe is violated, and the remedy you are seeking. You must send this notice via the Contact Us page or by email to the address published there. We will acknowledge your notice within 7 days and endeavour to resolve the matter within 30 days of receipt. If the dispute is not resolved within that period, either party may proceed with formal action. This notice-and-cure requirement does not apply to emergency injunctive relief or to claims by regulatory authorities, who are not bound by these terms.

8. Contact

If you have questions about these terms, please contact us. For data-related questions see the Privacy Policy.
